What is Legal Nurse Consulting?

Legal nurse consulting is the analysis and evaluation of facts and testimony to render informed opinions related to the delivery of healthcare services related to the nature and cause of injuries. Legal nurse consulting involves critical analysis of clinically relevant information; healthcare records, medical literature, relevant legal documents and other information pertinent to the evaluation and resolution of cases or claims.

The Legal Nurse Consultant, Certified (LNCC) is a professional registered nurse with a rich foundation of knowledge and experience trained in the medical-legal aspect of healthcare delivery. The LNCC is qualified to assess adherence to standards and guidelines of practice as applied in the legal arena.

What makes a legal nurse COnsultant CERTIFIED distinct?

LNCCs serve as analysts, collaborators, strategists, researchers, and educators. With an in-depth knowledge of nursing, medicine and the healthcare system, their contributions are recognized in all types of medical-legal cases or claims across all medical-legal settings. As such, LNCCs are uniquely qualified and valuable members of the legal team.

The American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the professional enhancement of registered nurses practicing in a consulting capacity in the legal field. The AALNC offers specialty certification as a Legal Nurse Consultant Certified (LNCC®) for registered nurses who have met practice experience requirements and passed an examination testing all areas of legal nurse consultancy. LNCCs renew their certification every five years through continuing education or reexamination and continued practice in the specialty. Additional information about America’s Association of Legal Nurse Consultants can be found at www.aalnc.org.

Certification indicates mastery/competency as measured against a defensible set of standards. Standards set through a defensible, industry-wide process (job analysis/role delineation) that results in an outline of required knowledge and skills.
